The 1967 Hino Contessa 1300 was a stylish Japanese compact car that combined Italian design, rear-engine engineering, and European-inspired handling. Powered by a 1.25-liter rear-mounted inline-four, the Contessa produced about 55 horsepower, and its rear-wheel-drive layout and independent suspension gave it driving characteristics uncommon among Japanese economy cars of the era. Following Hino's partnership with Toyota, passenger-car production ended in 1967 as Hino shifted its focus to trucks and buses.
